US sanctions Russian firms and executives in response to cyberattacks

The punishment was in response to a number of hacks on US computer systems and Russia's tracking of undersea cables carrying telecommunications data The US Treasury Department on Monday imposed sanctions on several Russian companies and businessmen for engaging in cyberattacks and assisting Russia's military and intelligence services with other malicious activities. The agency said it was imposing sanctions on five Russian firms and three of their executives under legislation passed last year and an executive order aimed at punishing efforts to hack into US computer systems.
