Congress seems set to avert weekend government shutdown

Another farce. The government does not shut down, except for maybe 15% non essential departments that get their money as soon as the can is kicked down the road once more.

If they want budget cuts, they have tons of low hanging fruit. Domestic spying, exotic drone tech, unneeded stealth planes an ships, and all the other holdovers of the Cold War era.

A smaller, stronger military concerned with the defense of American soil is the order of the day. The rest of the world wants war. We have our own problems and most of them are because of our own multi-national war profiteers. We should be building alliances with nations that function, and learning from their methods, not allowing ourselves to slip into the false security of fascism or communism. Our strength is our people and this Congress won't see it.

How about we start with all the fraud and abuse in areas such as Medicaid and Foodstamps before we start messing with the military?

Because the welfare programs aren't even a fraction of the military budget and even when not efficient, they help Americans.....or is there a specific group of Americans that you don't like? I'm really thinking there is.

Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution provides Congress authority to raise and support Armies and to provide and maintain a Navy.

Considering the constitution doesn't have a section for foodstamps, I'll stick with what the founding fathers wanted over your veiled accusations or racism......

Actually I'm about as far from a bible-thumper as you're gonna get.

For someone who's supposedly spent time in both the Army and Navy, you sure don't seem to value that "special document" you swore to protect.

As far as said constitution goes, I'll quote it as I see fit, ESPECIALLY when it proves my point and shows the lack of logic behind yours.

Documents don't mean jack. It's the people who defend what they say. It's the code of honor and the dedication to do the right thing at the right time and for the right reason.

The fundamental problem here is your casual acceptance that people are "evil" as a choice. NOBODY is evil by choice. They just have bad views, based on bad experiences. You're one of them. Either you will fight the accusation that you're a xenophobe or you address my concern. That is how this goes. I've been through this too many times to indulge tedious platitudes.

Medicaid and food stamps together are a tiny fraction of the budget. Medicare and Medicaid fraud WERE being agressively addressed by the previous administration, but this administration doesn't seem to be continuing those efforts.

Meanwhile, were have "boneyards" filling with brand new planes and tanks that our military does not need, and all due to congressional representaives who are protecting jobs in their districts.

I had to memorize the preamble in grade school. Have you forgotten?

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Promote the general welfare. Translation: we don't let our fellow Americans starve, even if some people would be okay with that.

Some welfare goes to the elderly, or the disabled, or ill, but most goes to unwed mothers, and lazy shiftless men who won't take responsibility for themselves. The American workers have had it with those people, and if they are able bodied we will insist they get off the sofa, and get jobs. There are help wanted signs everywhere. Fun's over. Get a job.

Actually the new Congress must be working on bridges, and infrastructure, because 2 bridges near here are being shored up, and the local towns have beautiful new roads. There's money everywhere. Of course I live in a Republican county, and you probably don't.

Those projects were probably paid for by Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Trump hasn't been in office long enough to fund anything besides his many rounds of golf.

Even before the United States Constitution the States individually had adopted aid and pension programs in following the England Poor Laws

The modern social security and Medicare benefits are an adoption of those public assistance programs. Anything else would have been uncivilized in forging progressive communities.

The same Article I in Section 8

Clause 18

To make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by this Constitution in the government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof.

It has been commonplace in my experience for those receiving disability claims to be very capable of performing a job and too many in just a small town to be also working under the table 50 hours a week. Also, I've come to think that those people with the boom box sound systems in their cars capable of actually shaking houses for blocks are in fact planning to collect disability free money for the rest of their lives by being able to establish severe hearing loss disability. There are other examples of similar self-destructive behavior encouraged by the liberality and laxity of various welfare programs, such as the boom in drug addictions, which qualify one for SSI. The drain on Federal and State financial capacities is significant the more society allows and validates these types of scams. The anarchist, Communist Democrat dialectic now governing many of the Liberal minds justifies using these scams and inflated welfare systems to undermine the military and sometimes society itself. But, the anti-military, anti-U.S. concept of overwhelming the budget with fake and manufactured claims has been especially damaging since the 1970s, when many of these flakes were waving North Vietnamese flags and burning ours.

True, Obamacare wiped out millions of jobs along with his liberal policies. Of course we have to look at the greed that liberals used to create housing for people that can't afford it. Now the people have no homes, bad credit, poor transportation and children that are second and third generational welfare. Your Welfare King Obama caused many to suffer. It is why Trump Won.
