Washington, D.C. (AHN) - President Barack Obama is scheduled to sign into law on Thursday the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a bill giving workers more time to make pay discrimination complaints.

The President will sign the measure at 10:00 am ET at the East Room of the White House. He will be joined by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The White House has said in a statement, "This bill will be a big step forward not just for women, but for families. It is not only a measure of fairness, but can be the difference for families struggling to make ends meet during these difficult times."

This is long overdue, but I'm not sure it's going to make much of a difference. As a society we need to start raising our daughters to ASK for what they want rather than politely waiting for someone to notice them: http://urbzen.com/2009/01/29/lilly-ledbetter-... ís-guide-to-negotiation/

Stephanie you are correct. From what I understand this bill also allows for lawsuits against companies who practice pay discrimination and time is no factor.

Its a start. A change. Hopefully a better way of life for women and minorities in the work place.:)

Not sure if I want the Government getting into equal pay decisions for my employees. I decide who brings more value and it is not based on Race , creed sex or religon. If a worker is willing to accept the pay that I feel is adequate for the job then that is their and my decision. You can't come back years later and try to renogiate your original salary with me based on sex or race and tell me you git a raw deal.
If you don't like the pay ....go get a job somewhere else.

This sounds more like socialiast communisism ....tham Free Enterprise

Agreed. Obama and his liberal all star team are working harder than ever to destroy the free market system in the USA.
So by making sure that pay is distributed equally and not based on gender or color but instead on know-how and performance is "destroying the free market?"

Let me guess....you're a white male?

What this means is paying your female and minority employees equal pay as you would your white male employess who hold the SAME positions in the workplace. Holding the same titles and doing the exact same jobs. So, YES it's a EXCELLENT LAW!

I do that Now...why do I need the Government to get involved with establishing my payroll expense?

Not everyone produces the same output or brings the same value to the company and their pay is reflected in that.

Well if you do that now there is nothing to worry about. You run a fair business. Those who do not bring the same output for the position that they are hired for as others in the position then they should not be in the position in the first place to recieve the kind of pay that the position requires.

Says the "business owner" that is concerned that the government wants to make sure he/she is being fair and balanced in your employee pay. If you have nothing to worry about, then why whine?

What gave this issue the spot light was Lily Ledbetter, a caucasian woman who lost out on 250,000 from being under paid because she was a woman and doing the exact same job as her male caucasian co workers. She discovered this when she retired from a job she gave many years to.

This is not about minorities (blacks) as everyone would love to think. This is about women and minorities being cheated because they are women and minorities. This is not a black thing. Its a whats right thing!!

You are very, very, very stupid if you think this new law is good for women or anyone. None of you must have jobs.. or else you would know that women do not get paid as much because they do not show up as much, do not work as hard, have lower productivity, take off way more time from work, call in sick all of the time and will quit at the drop of a hat for a number of reasons. Women are also unaccountable for their actions- I could go on all day why women make horrible employees based on 25 years in the corporate environment- which is why i actually think it's great the bill is passed- now employers won't hire any more women!! YAY! It's about time - I'm sick of the stupid bitches!!

Well let's hope you own no businesses where you will have to employ women because if so I can see your business going down the tubes due to the many lawsuits that will be filed against you.

You're an idiot - no one HAS to hire women. And if there is some new EOE psycho/communism laws passed businesses will just find ways around that too- there is always an excuse to not hire someone. It was also very, very, very stupid for this moron to sign this bill during a country wide ECONOMIC COLLAPSE- wackos coming out of the woodwork harassing the courts- it's GHETTO JACKPOT time! Just shows that Obama's judgment and prioroities are upside down and he is a very, very, very stupid person.

Yes YOU do have to hire women because if you do not it would be deemed discrimination and against the law. Stop saying stupid stuff already.

.. This is completely insane. This law is just making it harder on EVERYONE. Large corporations, fearing lawsuits, will pay more money for attorneys and will probably cut back on their employees and/or their salaries to pay for these employees. Smaller companies will find it harder to hire women because of the liability this act imposes on them (it's rather hard to regulate whether women or men are going to be hired even if they are equal, so the liability will urge companies to hire the men). Also, companies will begin to outsource their jobs even more for fear of being persecuted by the government and citizens claiming archaic alleged injuries and unfair payrolls. This isn't even about what's wrong or right, it's just about special interests in the Congress and other groups and organizations hiding behind a equal-rights philosophy.

Pay should be based on a person's merit and be it male or female.

The government should not be involved. It's merely another way for it to further expand into the private sector of business.

That's not to say that a person should be paid what they are worth but nonetheless, this sets a terrible precident in the long term.

Only that is NOT the purpose of this bill. The purpose of this bill is to give the under achievers an unfair advantage over every body else.

There are 2 workers doing the same job. One meets or exceeds his or her quota every shift while the other one false to meet his or her quota. Is it right that the under achiever should receive the same pay as everybody else?

That is one of my personal pet peeves about the Unions. One or 2 individuals are allowed or in some cases encouraged to goof off while everyone else is forced to cover for them. If the employer tries to fire them the Union walks out on strike. You know it is the old if you don't fight to help Joe the goof off keep his job then when they try to fire you who will stand the picket line for you and your job?

If a person agrees to work for a company and then goof off or does not do their assigned tasks they should be fired not rewarded.

Just my personal opinion.
