1) "Reasonable" regulations are never reasonable. Gun laws have never made the public safe.

2) Defensive gun use is rare. Duh. This is the intention. Gun possession deters crime or victimization. We possess many things to have in the event of emergency: smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, spare tires, weapons, and anything to be used as backup if the need arises.

3) Car crashes kill as many people who have been killed in war. Neither are Constitutionally protected, but guns are.

States with the highest prevalence of gun ownership have four times the gun suicide rate as the states with the lowest prevalence.
Japan has the fewest guns and the most suicides. Switzerland the most guns and the fewest sucides. Suicide has little to do with guns and more to do with the State or country. America has the most guns and therefore should have the highest suicide rate of all countries. America's suicide rate has been constant while gun ownership has been rising ?

5) Antigun people are not concerned with violence or who is murdered by gun. Tjhey're concerned with (they want) govt control over the people to help them create and keep a totalitarian/authoritarian govt. They fear the Individual rather than the Govt. They trust big govt. Police want gun control to help them earn money (fame, money, career).

...But where gun ownership is common, the violence is more likely to involve guns and hence be more deadly than in jurisdictions where guns are scarcer.
Which jurisdictions have a scarcity of guns ? Big cities with restrictive gun laws ? Gun ownership is common in Alaska. Is Alaska more violent than in Chicago ... Alaska has less restrictive gun laws than Chicago.

The evidence is clear that some of these regulations are effective and do save lives.
Gun laws (regulations) have never proven to make anyone safe or more safe - the above quote is a lie. Gun laws are applied to people who won't commit assault, rape, theft, or murder. Gun laws make us less safe, not more safe.

...But there is no sense in the assertion that we should combat the causes of violence instead of regulating guns.
Wrong again. The war on drugs (Prohibition) is the root cause of most gun violence. Eliminate the govt's drug war, legalize street drugs, and there would be an 80% drop in gun violence. This happened after the first Prohibition (alcohol) was eliminated.

I can't find a single independent scientific source for the claims in this article.
Th author does not provide a source for the claims made.

The author compares gun homicides in the US to those in France and Australia in number five yet in "fact" number four he/she fails to mention that France and Japan both have higher suicide rates per capita than the US in spite of the fact that both of those countries have almost zero guns in the hands of private citizens.

The point being that countries with fewer guns have fewer gun homicides so clearly those one impacts the other. If the same were true for suicides then France and Japan would have less suicides than the US.
